Concrete costs for smaller jobs

We have some of our customers ask us for quotes for smaller concrete work around the house, such as shed slabs, patios, sidewalks, driveway extensions, garage aprons.

Here are some typical smaller slab sizes we do for our clients in Calgary Alberta:

1.) 10' x 10'

2.) 10' x 12'

3.) 12' x 16'

4.) 20' x 20'

We're a small local family run business at Envirocrete Inc. we have over 30 years combined concreting experience and know the business and the costs quite well here in Calgary. All prices quoted will be in CAD. The below estimates will cover concrete costs, concrete small load charges, rebar reinforcement, and labour required. Costs may also vary from concrete contractor to contractor depending on the experience and skill required for the job and how busy they are.

Some notes to consider:

• Gravel and compaction not included in estimates

• Excavation and earth removal will be an additional cost for labour, machine hire and waste removal

• Small work is usually 4” thick.

Concrete costs around $320 CAD per cm3 here in Calgary Alberta, depending on the time of year and the additives required in the mix, it might be different where you live.

• Included are rebar chairs in all our concrete work, this helps with crack prevention and gives our customers a more durable longer lasting product.

Our labour costs will be the same for all works under 20’ x 20’, the time to excavate prep and pour takes about the same for all concrete slab sizes under 20’ x 20’

Why is the concrete volume the same for the 10' x 12' and 12' x 12'?

The concrete batch plants in Calgary let us order in 0.5 cm3 lots, so we have to get it as close as possible to the correct volume typically rounding up so as not to run short.

What is a concrete small load charge?

Depending on where you live these rates can vary. In Calgary Alberta we are charged $100 per Cm3 for every Cm3 under 4. That’s why we often recommend to our customers to get multiple jobs done at once as it can save money in the long run and help keep costs down.

Why are labour costs all the same?

Generally speaking with the prep and, pour usually the time frame is usually the same. As noted above excavation and gravel compaction can be arranged at additional costs.

Labour costs:

• Site inspection

• Plan and send out estimate

• Transport materials to site

• Set and brace formwork

• Cut, place and tie in rebar

• Order, place, and finish concrete

• Strip formwork and site clean up

Other things that can bring up the costs:

• Ground conditions and if more gravel compaction is required to strengthen the sub-base.

• Footings/thickened edges when needed (usually if the slab is going to be load bearing)

• Sidewalks and patios against a house we will sometimes have to use brackets attached to the foundations to prevent sinking if the earth has been recently back filled, this can add additional costs.

• Slabs that require a Styrofoam base for heat insulation
