Would you like to know how much a standard concrete slab costs?
In this post I will break down the costs associated with getting concrete work done. Please note these prices are a close approximation as every job is different and costs can go up and down by a number of factors. The cost of concrete also varies all around Canada. Here in Calgary Alberta its about $350 per m3 depending on the time of year and additives that are required because of weather.
At Envirocrete Inc. we are a small family run local business in Calgary, that specializes in custom concrete services and designs, we have over 30 years combined experience in residential and commercial concreting from all around the world. We have a pretty good idea about the whole concreting process from start to finish and what the main costs associated with getting great concrete work done.
The of the 4 most common concrete slab sizes we pour are:
1.) 22’ x 22’
2.) 22’ x 24’
3.) 24’ x 24’
4.) 24’ x 30'
5.) 30' x 20'
6.) 30' x 40'

If you require smaller sized concrete slabs 20' x 20' (400 sq. ft) and under check out this blog post Cost of small concrete work in Canada as it goes into the minimum costs in more depth.
What does a 30’ x 30’ concrete slab cost?
What we usually charge for a 900sq. ft slab @4” depth is $5.5 per sq. ft (excavations and earth removal not included)
So that works out to be 30’x 30’ = 900sq. ft
900 x 5.5 = $5197.5 tax included
What’s included in that price?
The labour and materials in the above price included are:
• Formwork lumber
• Steel Rebar
• Rebar chairs (to hold up steel and centre it in the concrete to prevent cracking)
• Erect the formwork and bracing
• Cut, place, and tie in all rebar
• Place and finish concrete • Strip and dismantle formwork
• Saw cut in contraction joints (for crack prevention)
What will not be inclusive in that cost?
• Earth excavations and removal from site
• Color in the concrete
• Exposed aggregate finish
• Stamped pattern finish
• Concrete line or boom pump for difficult hard to get to accesses
• Concrete frost/pony Walls
• Concrete Stairs
• Concrete demolition and removal from site
Calgary Concrete Costs
We usually get charged for concrete in Calgary Alberta (depending on time of the year) is $350 cm3.
So that works out to be 30’x 30’ = 900 sq. ft
900 = 9cm3 concrete
9 x 350 = $3307.5 (tax included)
So for a complete package with everything the costs work out to be:
Materials and Labour costs ($5.5 sq.ft) : $5197.5
Earth excavation and gravel placement and compaction ($3 sq.ft) : $2835
Concrete Price and cost ($350x900) : $3307.5
Total costs for a 30’x 30’ slab = $11,340 (GST included)

Some other costs to consider
Footings/thickened edges around the slab. Usually for garage or house slabs they require more strength because of extra load from walls. Please check with you local council for footing depths as they can vary.
Here in Calgary it's at least 48”x12” from top of concrete to footing depth for areas over 596 sq. ft or double story.
In Canada allot of the slabs we do have thickened edges because of the freeze though cycles. Smaller slabs like concrete patios or sidewalks we can usually just use a strong sub-base compaction of thick gravel or brackets connecting to the house foundations.
The additional cost can be around $1- $2 sq. ft
Insulation Styrofoam that helps insulate the concrete floor especially if the slab has heating tubes built into it or in colder climates like Canada where insulation styrofoam is required allot of the time.
The additional can be around $1.5- $2.5 sq. ft (installation included)
Some larger commercial concrete slabs will require a plastic membrane over the compacted gravel to keep all the moisture within the slab and act as a vapour barrier.
The additional cost is usually around $0.50 sq. ft (installation included)

What does a 30’ x 40’ concrete slab cost?
Based on our calculations above:
30’ x 40’ = 1200 sq. ft
Materials and Labour ($5.5 sq.ft) 1200 x $5.5 = $6,600
Earthworks and Gravel ($3 sq.ft) = $3600
Concrete ($350x12) = $4200
Total costs = $15,120 (tax included)
What does a 30’ x 20’ concrete slab cost?
Based on our calculations above:
30’ x 20’ = 600 sq. ft
Materials and Labour ($5.5 sq.ft) 600 x $5.5 = $3300
Earthworks and Gravel ($3 sq.ft) = $1800
Concrete ($350x6)= $1200
Total costs = $7560 ( Tax included)
What does a 30’ x 24’ concrete slab cost?
Based on our calculations above:
30’ x 24’ = 720 sq. ft
Materials and Labour ($5.5 sq.ft) 720 x $5.5 = $3960
Earthworks and Gravel ($3 sq.ft) = $2160
Concrete ($350x7.5)= $2625
Total costs = $8745 ( Tax included)
What does a 24’ x 24’ concrete slab cost?
Based on our calculations above:
24’ x 24’ = 576 sq. ft
Materials and Labour ($5.5 sq.ft) 576 x $5.5 = $3168
Earthworks and Gravel ($3 sq.ft) = $1728
Concrete ($350x6)= $2100
Total costs = $7154 ( Tax included)
What does a 24’ x 22’ concrete slab cost?
Based on our calculations above:
24’ x 22’ = 528 sq. ft
Materials and Labour ($5.5 sq.ft) 528 x $5.5 = $2904
Earthworks and Gravel ($3 sq.ft) = $1584
Concrete ($350x5.5)= $1925
Total costs = $6733 ( Tax included)
What does a 22’ x 22’ concrete slab cost?
